Shrewsbury’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy involvement for another season is over after our first round exit on Tuesday night.

We went to Deepdale looking, and hoping, to cause an upset against Preston North End but the league 1 side were too strong and got the win they deserved, maybe they deserved more than the 1-0 secured?

First half domination couldn’t be converted into goals by the hosts though with Will Hayhurst, causing constant problems, picked out Scott Laird but his header was straight at a grateful Shrews ‘keeper Jayson Leutwiler.

Leutwiler again got in the way again to prevent a goal at the end of another telling Hayhurst cross as the half ended nil-nil. We were grateful for the break.

Finally, on the hour, the breakthrough came when Calum Woods found the unmarked Jordan Hugil (59) and the former Port Vale man put Preston ahead.

Shortly after Jean-Louis Akpa Apro did force a good save out of Preston ‘keeper Thorsten Stuckmann, but that was about as good as it got for us really as we bowed out.
